Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
My commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is deeply embedded in my identity as an artist, scholar, and teacher. I am proud to be a nationally recognized leader in this area, and the vast majority of my scholarly and artistic work centers on advocacy for underrepresented communities. When I have curatorial or artistic agency, I intentionally gravitate toward repertoire composed by women.
In addition to advocating for my LGBTQIA+ community, I have become increasingly outspoken about women’s inclusivity in the field. Whether selecting repertoire or making hiring decisions, equity and representation are often my highest priorities. As a cisgender white male, I believe it is essential to practice visible and active allyship and to ensure that the responsibility for advancing inclusivity does not rest solely on those who are most directly affected.

Continuing Growth
Much like my teaching, I am committed to continuous growth and improvement as an artist and scholar for the remainder of my career, however long that may be. I strive to improve on my instrument each day and to make meaningful artistic progress in the years ahead. Balancing personal practice with teaching, administrative responsibilities, and life outside of work has been an ongoing challenge, but I am committed to developing a sustainable plan that supports long-term artistic growth.
I remain focused on pursuing creative and scholarly work that is both personally meaningful and impactful within the field. To that end, I am preparing an upcoming album project tentatively scheduled for completion this summer. Titled A New Voice, the album will center on repertoire not originally written for trumpet, primarily vocal works, presented as transcriptions that bring a new interpretive perspective to existing repertoire. The project will feature works by Amy Beach, Lori Laitman, Clarice Assad, André Previn, and Samuel Barber, and will include collaborations with Brock Tjosvold, former Crane collaborative faculty, Charles Guy, and Chelsea Kim, violinist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. I have not released a solo album since my 2020 recording (released in 2022) and I feel that this is an important moment to share new work. I am further encouraged by the reception of my previous album, which was awarded a silver medal by the Global Music Awards this year.
In addition to this work, I have increased my local professional engagement, including joining the Northern Symphonic Winds. It is important to me to demonstrate my commitment to the Potsdam community by uplifting and contributing to the local artistic landscape that I call home. I intend to keep exploring additional opportunities for local engagement, with a particular focus on community service and outreach through music.
Maintaining balance will be essential to my continued growth. As I noted in my teaching reflection, finding an equilibrium among creative and scholarly activity, recruitment, service, and teaching has been a challenge. Moving forward, I aim to be more intentional about how I allocate my time. Picking and choosing the opportunities that are most meaningful to my artistic development, my professional trajectory, and my community will hopefully result in more satisfaction and peace of mind.
