Reflections
I have not taught this course since 2023, but each iteration taught me valuable lessons about time management and preparation. In 2022, students expressed a sense of “crunch time” leading up to the first concert, a feeling I shared as well. In response, I made intentional changes in 2023 to improve organization and pacing, with the goal of “hitting the ground running” from the start of the semester. Weekly emails outlining detailed rehearsal schedules helped students understand exactly when they were needed and resulted in more efficient use of rehearsal time overall.
Looking ahead, I would like to continue developing my conducting skills. If I lead this class again or take on brass ensemble conducting, I would seek guidance from Brian Doyle and Mike Colburn. While I have clear musical ideas and strong interpretive instincts, I recognize that I currently lack the physical and visual conducting technique needed to communicate those ideas as effectively as I would like.
