The Crane Trumpet Studio, led by Dr. Luke Spence and Prof. Chris Keach is a thriving community of 30-40 trumpet majors at the SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music. The studio is comprised of undergraduate Music Education, Music Performance, Musical Studies, and Music Business Majors. These enthusiastic learners participate in ensembles such as the Crane Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Latin Ensemble, Mariachi Ensemble, the Frackenpohl Honors Brass Quintet, and more. Our students regularly compete at the National Trumpet Competition and the Crane Trumpet Ensemble was featured at the 2023 International Trumpet Guild Conference. Members of the Crane trumpet studio are prepared to fulfill their goals beyond college and myriad are teaching in the public school system or have moved on to highly acclaimed graduate programs.
With community and collaboration at the forefront of our mission, Crane trumpets can attend optional warm-up classes on Fridays throughout the semester, are encouraged to play duets, and each student has access to both professors' guidance and mentorship. Aside from the musical togetherness, Crane trumpets have been known to have studio parties, go ice skating together, and of course participate in long-standing traditions like Secret Santa and beating the trombone studio in softball at the end of the year.
